Betty’s New Year’s Day Hoppin’ John Recipe

In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make a traditional Southern dish, New Year’s Day Hoppin’ John. This is a dish that consists mainly of black-eye peas, rice, onions, and ham. It is to be eaten on New Year’s Day, in order to bring a prosperous new year. This is my own version of Hoppin’ John, and I have designed it to meet the requirements of the traditional dish, yet taste wonderful!     I usually fry up some bacon and then fry up the onions in that. Adding the cooked bacon back to the peas. Other than that is the same here on the Gulf Coast. I use the canned peas too, but I rinse them so they won’t be so salty.
    We also have cabbage with pork and definetely cornbread with it all.

    No, it won’t make the rice mushy. It only gets reheated for about 5 minutes to serve it hot. Thanks for your comment!

    Cool, we’ll try it with my girlfriend.

    I just moved from south Florida up to Wisconsin to live with my girlfriend, so it’s nice to get some southern sunshine in these recipes.

    when you add liquid of the bean can to the cooked rice , won’t make the rice mushy!
