CHANG: Chinese New Year celebrations around the globe are still in full swing. Thousands of Londoners filled the streets of Chinatown to celebrate the year of the Ox last weekend. NTD’s London team had a glance at some of the festivities there. Let’s take a look. STORY: Its Londons Chinatown, and traditional lion dances kick off the Year of the Ox celebrations with their vigorous music. Thousands of Londoners have come to greet the Lunar New Year. A five-year-old boy came to celebrate the New Year with his parents. [Joseph Ingham, School Student]: Happy Chinese New Year. And so did a few Chinese language teachers who came to town with their students. [Robert Nicholls, School Teacher]: My colleague with me here this afternoon is our Chinese assistant in school, and we brought some students down to show them the Chinese New Year celebrations and a little bit of Chinese culture [Hai Ping Tan, Chinese Language Assistant]: Its very exciting, Im so happy to see many people here and lots of activities especially here in the UK The lion dance is an ancient New Year tradition that brings good luck to businesses and families by chasing off evil spirits. The lion is offered a lettuce that is then tossed around to spread fortune in all directions. Food is also a big part of the New Year celebrations. This stall makes a special sweet called the dragon beard candy. Its a thousand-year-old recipe thats been handed over from generation to generation. Made by hand from a noodle-making …
