My husband told me about this being one of his favorite youtube videos. I have to agree. I love this! I also love that your grandson has captured family history, and video of his grandmother that will be not only for him but all to share. I look forward going through all your videos and trying new things. Thank you from my family to yours taking the time to capture and share these recipes and memories. I bet if the TV cooking channel had your own show it would be a hit.

She reminds me of my aunt that I recently lost, thank you so much for the postings. Even though I am half the age I enjoy so much and ate many of the same meals growing up because we were very poor and our grandparents suffered through the depression.

Hahaha!! But Clara’s right, though. The Depression was absolute hell on ordinary families. Money ran out, families were evicted into the streets by landlords, they ran out of money for food, utilities & clothing. They did anything to survive. Stories tell of men working two, three or four part-time jobs a week to put food on their family’s tables, because no one business could afford fulltime employees. People ate whatever they could find, buy, shoot or run down with their cars.

I just got your book; and my dd insisted we read it cover to cover. You are helping another generation through some tough economic times by sharing what you went through during the Great Depression. It could very well be that countlesss children will go to bed tonight with full bellies and be spared hunger and deprivation because of what you have shared with us all. I pray for continued good health and God’s continued blessing on your life for helping othersGod bless you Miss Clara.

Agreed. Most working mothers/wives work because they must help their husbands support the family economically. However, there are plenty of married professional women with pre-school aged children who could stay home and take care of them and the home, but choose to work any way. In these cases I wonder if their careers, material possessions, status, etc. matter more to them than their children.

I disagree partially with DKMontoya4670. I’m a mom of a 21 yr old and I stayed home with my son only a few years but enjoyed it all – cooking all our meals, using cloth diapers because they were less expensive and we had our own washer. I would have loved to stay home for many more years but went back to work. I agree – this recession can help us all focus on what’s really important and learning patience again in making a home cooked meal.

During the depression we had mothers who were home with their children; mothers who cooked, cleaned, and were meticulous managers of the home. Today mothers would rather have others raise their children and fastfood and no one manages the home. In a way, this recession may be a godsend to teach parents how to be parents, how to be frugile, and how to make home the most important consideration.

From one old woman in Colorado.

“No, I don’t want any” and that’s why she’s 94. She knows when to refuse food that’s not needed unlike those that are over-weight. Caloric restriction is the only proven way to extend life!

@DKMontoya4670 Excuse me! It’s not that we would rather have “others raise” our children… The FACT IS we have NO CHOICE!! If you want your family to have even the basic necessities of life, usually BOTH husband and wife need to be working… Believe me, we would rather be at home with our children but in this day and age this is something we no longer can afford to do! Sorry Clara, I hope I don’t sound like I am whining ;-)
